Winterize your Skincare Routine

When the weather starts to change, our skincare routine needs to
as well. While we Arizonians are fortunate enough not to deal with
blistering and brutal winters, our “cold” season still calls a
concern to our skin. During the winter, the inside of our homes
tend to be blasting with heat, which makes for very dry air that
dehydrates our skin. Then we go right outside, where we get slammed
with cold temperatures. Signs of dry skin include flaking,
tightness, tenderness, itchiness, or even dullness. In extreme
cases, it can be raw, cracked, and/or bleeding. And what’s the
first thing that we do? Moisturize. We’ve been told the same old
trick for years, “moisturize more when it gets cold”, but that
can only do so much. Here are some other tips and tricks to 
correct and prevent winter skin.

1. Get a Humidifierskin loving habits

Having the heater cranked can cause major skin dehydration. This
can leave your skin flaky, cracked, and dull. Getting a humidifier
for your house can help add some of that moisture back into the air
and your skin!

2. Watch the Booze

We hate to be a buzzkill, but pouring yourself a warming glass
of liquor will only make your dry skin worse. Alcohol dehydrates
the skin and deprives the skin of vital vitamins and nutrients,
causing it to look dull and lifeless. It also dilates the blood
vessels in the skin, causing it to be red.

3. Wear Sunscreen

Why wear sunscreen when there is no sun? Because Ultraviolet
rays still break through the clouds and cause sun damage. In the
winter it’s (surprisingly) extra important to wear sunscreen
because the ultraviolet rays bounce off the snow and ice and hit
the bottom of your face, while the top is already being hit as
well. If you’re like us and are fortunate enough to live in the
valley, we don’t experience the snow. However, this means it’s
still sunny every day, so we still need to apply that
sunscreen.

4. No Hot Showers

I’m not saying we need to take cold showers here! Just not
excessively hot showers. Hot water actually constricts the blood
vessels making us more prone to get the chills. Not only this, hot
water strips the skin of its natural oils, leaving it parched,
flaky, and even cracked. I know that a hot shower feels amazing
when there’s a chill in the air, but try to keep the health of
your skin in mind.

winter skin5. Exfoliate like a boss

Using a physical or chemical exfoliant is key to stay glowing
during the winter. You should do this twice a week for best
results. Dead skin cells build up and create a blockage that your
serums, moisturizer, and other products can’t penetrate. This
means less of that product goodness is not getting into your
skin!

6. Get a Dermaplane or HydraFacial

This is specific, but these treatments are dead skin cell
vacuums. Dermaplaning quite literally “shaves” the peach fuzz
and dead skin cells right off. With those being exfoliated off,
your products can penetrate deeper and be more effective!
HydraFacial is another amazing treatment for dry skin. It easily
sucks up impurities while simultaneously infusing hydrating skin
solutions with potent antioxidants. The best mixture for winter
skin.
